Noguchi Gallery
Problem
Design a small gallery for an artist on a square site that is diagonally bisected by a forest.
Solution
The gallery was designed for the sculptor Isamu Noguchi, responding to his exploration of the relationships between Eastern and Western cultures, positive and negative space, and natural and built objects. The gallery hugs the forest, creating a closed front and a sculpture garden in the alcove. The rooms step down, to play with views of space and encourage a leisurely traffic flow, inspired by water slowly trickling down rocks.
The Marketplace
Problem
Design a building for Lehigh University for a small site on the edge of the campus that was located along a main artery into South Bethlehem.
Solution
Being at this particular site, the Marketplace was designed to serve as a place for exchange and connection between the local community and the school. The building resembles two funnels - one "funnel" faces the city, providing space for students to sell their products, inventions and services to local community members and the other “funnel” faces campus, providing space for the local farmers market and other local businesses to sell to students. The center atrium is a place for connection, where traffic and ideas flow back and forth.
