Garden Terrace
Staten Island Children's Museum, New York
Problem
Create an exhibition that transforms an underutilized, concrete-tiled roof into a green space that engages visitors to connect with nature.
Solution
The exhibit is designed to encourage visitors to slow down and experience nature in different ways. The components support STEAM education by encouraging visitors to experiment with the properties of different natural materials through music and art, and explore natural elements with open-ended interpretation. One of the challenges of the space is that nothing could be affixed to the floor, so to address that, I designed organically-shaped planters that provided green space, softened the hard edges of the space, and created a weight for the exhibit components to be affixed. This had to be carefully designed, because the terrace is also the roof of an underground exhibit space, so weight restrictions needed to be taken into consideration.
